High and low range shifted under load, front hubs verified locking, transfer case fluid checked for glitter. If it binds or clunks, it gets fixed or it gets passed on.

Trans temp under load
We tow a loaded trailer up the same grade every time and log transmission temps. A truck that runs hot empty has no business wearing a tow rating.
